When replacing individual D.E. grids, always inspect the manifold and standpipe for cracks before installation. After replacing, backwash the filter first to seat the new grid, then re-charge with fresh D.E. powder at the rate of 1 lb per 10 sq ft of filter area (approximately 7.2 lbs for a 72 sq ft filter). Inspect grids for tears or damage annually — even a small tear allows D.E. powder to return to the pool, signaling it's time to replace.
