Will Stabilizer Hurt My Liner? Myths vs. Facts for Salt Pool Owners
One of the most common questions I get during the spring opening is: "Al, is that stabilizer going to damage my liner?" It’s a fair question—you see those granules sitting on the floor and it looks like they aren't doing anything but causing trouble.
Today, let’s clear the air and talk about why Stabilizer (Cyanuric Acid) is actually the best friend your liner—and your wallet—has.
Myth #1: Stabilizer sits on the floor and ruins vinyl.
The Fact: While stabilizer is a "slow-dissolve" chemical, it is not acidic enough to bleach or damage your liner when applied correctly. Unlike some shock treatments that can cause immediate fading, stabilizer is relatively pH-neutral.
Al’s Advice for the Cautious: In the photo above, you’ll see we’re broadcasting the granules directly into the pool—this is perfectly safe for your liner as long as your pump is running. But, if you’re still a little nervous about granules sitting on the floor, you can pre-dissolve the stabilizer in a bucket of pool water first, or pour it slowly into the skimmer to let the filter handle the breakdown!
Myth #2: It's just an extra expense you don’t really need.
The Fact: Think of Stabilizer as sunblock for your chlorine. If you have a salt chlorine generator, it’s working hard to create pure chlorine. Without stabilizer, the UV rays from the sun can destroy that chlorine in as little as two hours. Without it, your salt cell has to run at 100% just to keep up, which burns out your equipment years earlier than it should.
Myth #3: It breaks down and disappears quickly.
The Fact: Stabilizer is hardy. It doesn't evaporate and doesn't "use up" like chlorine does. This is great news! Once you establish your levels at the start of the season using Durachlor Stabilizer & Conditioner, you usually won't need to add more unless you’ve had a massive heatwave or a lot of "splash-out" from the kids.
Getting Your Levels Right
Getting your water chemistry dialed in during the opening is the only way to ensure a maintenance-free summer. If you’re seeing the bottom of the pool like in the photo above, you're on the right track!

Al’s Final Word: Always test your water before adding stabilizer. Since it stays in the water so well, it’s much easier to add a little more than it is to drain the pool because you overshot the mark!
