Hey everyone, Al here! We just got a sagging winter cover back under control. Now let’s look at the part sitting directly under that cover edge: the skimmer. Around New York, trapped water can freeze, expand, and crack a skimmer body. I’ve seen how expensive that little pocket of water can become, so a few careful minutes of freeze protection are worth it.
Start with a Clear, Empty Skimmer
Remove the basket, vacuum plate, and any loose debris. Then blow the suction line until a strong, steady stream of air appears at the skimmer. While the air is still moving, seal the line with the correct winter plug or the blowout valve on a skimmer-protection device.
This is one place where I always tell our team that “close enough” is not good enough. A plug has to match the fitting, seat cleanly, and seal without being forced. You can see the available sizes in our winter supplies collection.
Give Expanding Ice Somewhere to Go
After the line is sealed, add a skimmer expansion device. The Pool Gizzmo Ultra threads into the skimmer and is designed to absorb ice expansion before that pressure reaches the skimmer wall. Its blowout valve also allows the line to be cleared through the device.
For compatible above-ground wide-mouth skimmers, an Aquador winter skimmer plate can isolate the skimmer without lowering the pool below the opening. Always confirm the skimmer model and plate dimensions before ordering.
Skimmer Checklist
- The basket and loose fittings are removed.
- The suction line is fully blown out and sealed.
- The plug or Gizzmo is snug, not overtightened.
- The skimmer body does not hold a large pocket of water.
- The cover and water bags are not pressing hard against the skimmer opening.
Never pour automotive antifreeze into pool plumbing. If a winterization plan calls for added protection, use only swimming-pool antifreeze, such as Omega pool winter anti-freeze, and follow the equipment and product directions.
Check It Again Before the Freeze
A plug can loosen and a cover can shift after closing day. Shine a light into the skimmer before the first hard freeze and make sure everything is still seated. Next time, we’ll take a short break from plumbing and clean up the fall backyard without creating new problems for the closed pool.
